1. My nephew turned 13 (wow)!
2. We went to the Pacific Northwest Ballet "Don Quixote" played by Tom Skerritt, totally awesome!
3. Discovered a new delicious restaurant in Georgetown called "La Cantrina" that has amazing vegetarian tacos and guacamole.
4. Had a really tasty egg, lox, cream cheese, scallion and dill breakfast by Andrew.

It amazes me how someone can be so musically talented, last night we saw Eleanor Friedberger play at the Crocodile and it was one of my favorite shows ever. Her honest lyrics and total control was empowering in a way. I was super happy to hear most of the songs from her album "Last Summer" as well as a solo-performed Buddy Holly song which totally blew me away. I'm a huge fan. If you aren't already obsessed with her music, you should seriously pick some up. Have a great weekend! Love, -n

I watched the movie "Beginners" this weekend. It's been awhile since I've added to it, but it now belongs on my 'favorite movie' list. I also saw "50/50" which was great, as well as "Midnight in Paris." I would recommend all three. Other than that, we had nice time at a birthday party, relaxed with Lucas, enjoyed ceviche at Poquito's, made dill/lemon salmon and potatoes, steamed some crab with butter (so good!) and visited family. We may have made our best dinner yet: Saffron Risotto and Sea Scallops. We made a saffron risotto a couple weeks ago and other risotto recipes lately (we got a risotto cooking book for Christmas), but we were using store-bought vegetable stock. What were we thinking? So, yesterday, Andrew made a vegetable stock from scratch! It was beautiful! And our sea scallops were seared in a truffle sauce. It was a seriously delicious dinner. Hope you had a nice weekend too! This weekend went by too fast but it was nice. We spent time around the house rearranging rooms and doing a little pre-spring cleaning. Also visited with family, cooked (a lot) and made some donations to Goodwill. Yesterday, while on a neighborhood walk with the family, I witnessed the prettiest, pinkest, most vibrant and captivating sunset I've ever seen. My photos didn't do it justice. It was unreal. I, of course, made a huge deal out of it. I felt lucky to have caught it. Yesterday was an overall lucky day for me, I made a delicious breakfast that was "the best breakfast Andrew's ever had," which is a huge compliment. I'll share my secret, in one pan, I had veggie maple sausage patties cooking and in another, I heated up black beans and black olives, added eggs, and then right before they were done cooking, I added small bits of ricotta cheese. I served them with sour cream, salsa, and cilantro. Not sure why or how it could be so good with such basic ingredients, but it was! I'm on a cooking roll. That's about it. I cooked this time! I made fresh ravioli pasta with pesto sauce fa-ahh-rum scratch! It took a long time and was a lot of work, but I listened to Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" loudly (and a few more of their albums as my hands were full and I could not change the music) and was able to get way into the ravioli-making zone. Thankfully all of my hard work paid off. I think I would have cried if turned out any other way. A meal made from scratch is far more delicious and rewarding.

Fresh Bread and Pasta w/ Pea and Asparagus Risotto.

While Andrew and I both have our cooking specialties, Andrew is easily becoming the head chef of the household. Yesterday, he made the fresh pasta noodles, the French bread, and the Pea and Asparagus Risotto all from scratch! As it turns out, fresh pasta is surprisingly easy to do and makes all the difference in the universe when it comes to taste, consistency and enjoyment. Bear in mind, I helped a teeny tiny bit by running to the store for additional flour, keeping him company, hanging the pasta to dry after cutting it, and taking photos, but none of that really matters. Thanks Andrew! You're the best!

Like I mentioned in the last post, I went to the spa on Friday, which was a nice way to kickstart the holiday weekend. I followed that by having a lovely dinner date with my husband Andrew. We went to our new favorite local pizzeria on Beacon Avenue Bar Del Corso. We tried several smaller dishes the last time we went, so this time we tried their specialty, which is their wood-fired pizza and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. On New Year's Eve, I wanted to start the day with a bang, which involved running, cleaning, stopping by a few thrift stores and preparing to ring in the New Year's Eve celebration with some close friends, which was a lot of fun. Loads of snacks, board games, and chocolate from Hawaii, I fell for all of it. Anyway, wasn't New Years day in Seattle perfect? I was so happy that it was sunny when I woke up; it felt significant somehow. We decided to have breakfast at the Local 360, stroll around downtown, checkout some shops and have dinner at Anthony's where we had a view of the city, martinis, oysters, clams, swordfish and sea scallops. I wish I could do that every day, so good! Anyway, I hope everyone had a nice New Year's Eve celebration and weekend too! Back to reality for me. Love, -n

It appears as though everyone in my closer circle of friends and family, including myself, are going-through, trying and starting new ventures in their lives. I've never been one to get too sappy or sentimental about leaving and starting a new year, but this time it feels different. A new year equals a big deal. On a (kind of) related note, this last friday afternoon I went to the Banya 5 Spa for the third time in two years (it's sort of a special occasion type of thing), and it was exactly what I needed. It's the spa that has several different temperature pools, a sauna, a steam room and a refreshing tub of lemon ice-water. I think everyone could use a cleanse every so often, especially after the Christmas holiday. A few care free hours with a couple of loved ones at the spa --chit-chatting, reflecting, brainstorming and planning. It makes you feel as though you're set for the entire year ahead. My skin, even a few days later, feels "silky" smooth. So, in a round-about way, long story short, it's an exciting time. Life is really good. Wishing you an extremely joyful new year. Love, -naomi

I'm amazed at the amount of food photos there are. It was hard to narrow them down. Andrew and I celebrated our four year wedding anniversary this weekend. We started it off by having an unbelievably delicious meal at Serafina, one of our favorite restaurants. We had calamari, martinis, swordfish, and pumpkin cheesecake. It was also my first time having unfiltered wine "Dettori Bianco - Badde Nigolosu" it was all so wonderful! We also went to a couple Christmas parties. One was a cooking competition where Andrew and I were in charge of the dessert. We decided to make a cheesecake, topped with a chocolate swirl and the tiniest amount of crumbled candy cane for festive points. It actually turned out great and yes, I had cheesecake twice this weekend. Yikes! Oh and pizza, waffles, lattes, various appetizers, etc. But I guess that's what the holidays are for. Bar del Corso is a "pizzeria, restaurant and bar in the Beacon Hill neighborhood of Seattle featuring wood-fired pizza and Italian dishes meant for sharing, including salumi, cheeses and desserts. Local, seasonal, and traditional Italian ingredients go into every dish. The bar menu features regional Italian wines, up to five local beers on tap, classic Italian cocktails (aperitivi and digestivi) as well as a full bar."

This restaurant recently opened in our neighborhood. We went for the first time last night and had a very positive experience, I loved it! First of all, it was packed, always a good sign. We only waited 20 minutes for a table, which was totally worth it, everything was delicious! We shared wine from Puglia, Roasted baby chioggia & red beets w/ blood oranges and farro, Grilled Octopus w/ heirloom peperonata, and Vongole alla Marinara Manila clams. Great location, service, food, and atmosphere, so glad it's right around the corner from us. You should really try it some time, find out more here.

3. What do you always carry with you?
My teeth, keys, mixologist license and a pair of earrings. They all come in handy on a daily/weekly basis.

4. If you could have dinner with any deceased author, who and why?
Roald Dahl. He was one of my childhood heroes. I would like to spend most of the conversation making up words and finding their meaning with him. He and Jim Henson died in the same year when I was 5 which struck a cord- I thought all of his books would disappear and Sesame Street would end.

5. Worst food indulgence? (the more secretive the better).
Ice cream inside a buttered tortilla or bananas dipped in powdered sugar-i really should combine these to make the ultimate late night dessert.

6. If Obama were coming to your house for dinner, you would prepare your famous __________. (Include your recipe if you want!)
I don't cook, if I had to make something it would have to be california style veggie burritos. I would make sure my mom was there to discuss our government and what we've done to the land and the people with him.

7. If you had to make rules (like Fight Club), what would rule #1 always be?
Turn off the lights when you leave an empty room.

8. No one knows _______________ about me. (fill in the blank). Make it as serious as you want to.
I am a quarter Anishinaabe.

9. Is the Seattle freeze fictitious? How do you know?
I've lived here on and off for seven years. Every time I returned I would meet new people and my community would shift and expand. I think in any place you have to open up in order to create and develop the community that suits you. I've met most of my current friends and mentors through Vignettes, it took inviting people into my home to break through this so called 'freeze' but it worked pretty well. I would recommend it.

10. Where is the best place to eat dinner?
Musashi for sushi, Presse for the environment, Cafe Flora for the gluten free family mom's out there, Bamboo Garden for take out, and Vitos for the lounge and cocktails.

I was visiting family this weekend and came across this striking photo set that I had to share. They're actually a part of a larger set of Native American Portraits taken by Edward S. Curtis, called "Knowledge Cards" from The Library of Congress. I was looking through them with my dad which was neat because he was able to accurately tell me which tribe each one was from, based on their clothing, beadwork, hairstyle and features. Then I would confirm that he was right by turning the card over and reading the facts. I'm not sure if they're still being sold, I wasn't able to find them anywhere online (let me know if you find them). So beautiful..

I had a great weekend! Saw some friends, went to a couple special birthday celebrations, visited family, and successfully stayed warm.
For the past few years, Andrew and I have been tagging along with his family to a Christmas tree farm in Arlington, the kind of farm where you get to choose and cut down your own tree with a provided saw. I think it's the new tradition. The farm itself is huge, and full of all different kinds, colors, and sizes of trees, so there's lots of walking, judging, and laughing until you find the perfect tree. Meanwhile, there's Christmas music playing on the loud speakers, kettle corn for purchase, complimentary hot cider and chocolate, and a guaranteed fire burning in the main area for the chilly ones. If you're lucky, you can spot wild turkeys running around. It's about as Christmas-sy as it gets. We got a tree the first year we went, but after Lucas' tree obsession, which involved him tearing down the ornaments, drinking the tree water, climbing inside the tree, spreading pine needles everywhere, etc., we've decided a tree is not the smartest way to make our house-hold jolly. Instead, we put up lights, stockings, bows and lots of other alternative decorations (that Lucas can't reach), and then buy him more toys he's allowed to play with. Funny Lucas. Anyway, it was really nice, a great way to start the month of December. Hope you had a nice and warm weekend too! Love, -n

This leather camera strap from Portland's Tanner Leather Goods comes in seven different colors! I have narrowed my favorites down to "Natural" and "Tan" featured above. If anyone knows anything about this 'natural' color leather and how it ages, please let me know. Blackbird carries belts in this color and in the description it says "This leather is un-dyed and will absorb dye from your clothes, oils from your hands and anything this thirsty leather gets close to." I am a huge fan of aged leather, but that sounds scary right? I'm imagining blue pen marks and horrible dark stains everywhere. With that said I'm leaning towards the classic tan, but I don't want to be boring and give up on the account of simply never having seen this natural color aged. ??

Update: I received the light natural color strap and love it so far! No stains yet! Thanks Andrew!

We had a spontaneous visit to the Museum of Flight on black Friday. Didn't go shopping at all, but we ate a lot of casserole type dishes covered with different gravies and sauces throughout the weekend, my perfect kind of indulgence. The majority of the holiday weekend was spent organizing, putting up Christmas lights and doing home improvement. I threw away a ton of old "art" from school. The amount of nice paper I've wasted on poor explorations is a total tragedy. At least good to know that my taste has improved. Andrew turned our basement from a storage area into a nice living room with a TV, computer area, couch, record player, and rugs. It looks great! Now we have a higher functioning second bedroom. Very excited about that. Anyway, still full from this weekend, and we still have leftovers, I love the holidays! I hope you had a festive and warm weekend as well! Love, -n

Despite the especially frosty weather that everyone couldn't stop talking about this weekend, I did a lot of walking which I'm very proud of, I'd like to keep that up. I saw a pretty sunset, explored a few shops including { far 4 }, such a great place for gifts btw, enjoyed some local seafood, managed to stay toasty with fires, snuggly sweaters and my first eggnog latte of the year (which I forgot to snap). It's nice seeing fresh cranberries for sale in the market. I am sort of floored by it being Thanksgiving week already! I love this time of year! I've already started the calorie-fest by consuming several freshly baked chocolate chip cookies in one day. Another great reason to keep up the walking. Ooh! I picked up my dream sweater that I've already started calling my "life sweater," from J.Crew's sale section, I love it! (It's the one pictured in the top photo). Lastly, I went to a well designed pop-up shop that will be featured in Weekend Part 2. Hope you had a nice weekend! Love, -n

Andrew and I went to Cafe Presse for breakfast (again), so good! Afterwards, we went for a walk on Alki Beach and spotted a playful group of sea lions crossing the bay with their heads poking out of the water for a solid five minutes or so. It completely made my day. On Sunday, we went to McCormick's for some oysters and cocktails. They have this delicious asparagus risotto that I wish I had more of right now. I recommend it. Anyway, we had a pleasant weekend, I hope you did too! Love, -n

I have to say that Hudson (same owners as Smarty Pants) has a delightful veggie fried steak dish that doesn't taste vegetarian whatsoever. You should really try it sometime! Also, Elliot Bay Brewery is a fun place for lunch, sandwiches, and a specialty IPA. We went to the one in Burien, but there's also one in West Seattle that is equally fun. I'm always up for new restaurant recommendations if you have any! Hope you had a nice weekend! Love, -n

Photos from dinner at Plum Bistro, Seattle's 100% vegan and organic company. It's so nice finding delicious vegetarian spots.
